“Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.” – Sarah Dessen
Music at Northgate is taught across the school, to all classes and abilities, with the main emphasis, after learning, of having FUN!
Pupils study a variety of accredited courses including ASDAN, AIM Award and Creative Pathways,( at Entry level).
The subject is enhanced by tuition from the Northamptonshire Music Services for guitar lessons and an external professional for drum lessons. Pupils have been entered for Rock School exams in both these instruments achieving a high pass score.
As well as formal lessons, the school has a healthy attitude to singing and has taken part in the Northamptonshire Festival of Performing Arts. The pupils have also taken part in sign2sing raising awareness of deafness and learning to sign songs. Annually a choir of pupils and staff come together to sing at Wembley (SSE Arena) as part of a much, much larger choir (5,500+) – an amazing experience for all involved.
Pupils have the opportunity, in Key stage 4, to take part in a theatre visit to experience a live performance by professionals. In the past we have seen “We will rock you”, “The lion king”, “Footloose” “Oliver” and “Hairspray. We have also visited Sixfields cinema to take part in a live streaming performance of “War Horse”.
Singing takes a part, alongside live music, drama and dance in all our school productions where pupils are encouraged to perform above their personal expectations with some surprising results – a silent boy taking the lead role, a shy girl singing a solo with minimal support.
Music is an enriching and rewarding subject and the world would be a sadder place without it!
